AEW Dynamite April 16, 2025: Athena vs. Mercedes Mone, Ospreay vs. Takeshita, Trios Titles On The Line

This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite emanates from Boston, Massachusetts. Athena battles Mercedes Mone in the Women’s Owen Hart Foundation tournament. Will Ospreay and Konosuke Takeshita battle in the men’s. The Death Riders defend the AEW Trios Championships against Samoa Joe, Shibata, Powerhouse Hobbs, and more!

Let’s break it all down in this week’s AEW Dynamite recap!

Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tourney: Athena vs. Mercedes Mone

Mone locks in a waist lock on Athena, dragging her down the ramp. In the ring, the two trade submission holds. Mone gains the upper hand by hitting a Meteora on Athena in the corner, then transitions into a crossface.

Back from break, Athena looks for a piledriver, but Mone counters with a Lung Blower. She follows up with a Tornado DDT, then hits The Three Amigos. Athena powers back with a series of powerbombs. Mone sends Athena crashing to the outside. They exchange brawls on the ring apron, ending with Athena slamming Mone down with a scoop powerslam.

Mone sends Athena crashing into the barricade on the outside. Athena launches Mone into the LED screen with a Shotgun dropkick. Back in the ring, Athena leaps off the top looking for the O-Face, but Mone reverses into a roll-up for the win.

Winner: Mercedes Mone

After the match, AEW Women’s Champion Toni Storm looks down at Mone from the stands.

Backstage, The Young Bucks and Kazuchika Okada approach “Hangman” Adam Page and says they accept his “apology.” The Young Bucks also say they can patch things up with the Death Riders. Matt Jackson says Page can bring the AEW World Championship back to The Elite.

Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tourney: “Hangman” Adam Page vs. Josh Alexander

Alexander is revealed as the Wild Card in the tournament. Alexander and Page lock up. Alexander rocks Page with an elbow. Page sends Alexander flying with a fallaway slam. Alexander bounces Page off of the apron. Page walks up the ramp and jumps off of it with a lariat to Alexander.

Back from break, Alexander chops Page. Page responds with a lariat. Alexander rolls to the apron. Page meets him there and looks for a Dead Eye, but Alexander reverses. Page instead sends him crashing onto the apron with a back body drop. Page ascends to the top and descends with a moonsault to the outside. Page follows up with a sit-out powerbomb for a near fall. Alexander rolls up Page for a two count. He slams Page to the mat, then goes for the ankle lock. Page crawls the ropes to break the hold. He rocks Alexander with an enziguri. Page delivers a piledriver for another near fall. Alexander drops Page onto the apron, then sends him to the outside. Back in the ring, Page gets Alexander in an inside cradle for a three count.

Winner: Adam Page

After the match, Kyle Fletcher and Don Callis emerge on the stage. Page begins brawling with Fletcher. Page looks for the Buckshot Lariat, but Fletcher rolls out of the ring. From behind, Alexander attacks Page. Fletcher returns to the ring and drops Page with a brainbuster. Alexander leaves the ring.

Backstage, Christian Cage tells Nick Wayne that daddy is home. Nick says Cage didn’t stick to the plan because he couldn’t stand the idea of Cope becoming world champion again before him. Cage laughs and says he gave Nick a month to find himself. Cage says Nick lit a flame under himself. Cage confirms he got Nick a spot in the NJPW Super Juniors tournament. He says a good son would never let his father down.

AEW World Tag Team Titles: The Hurt Syndicate (Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin) (c) vs. Gates Of Agony (Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona)

Liona chops Benjamin against the ropes. Benjamin knocks him down, but Liona gets right back up. Kaun leaps onto Lashley on the outside. Kaun hammers down at Benjamin. Benjamin tags in Lashley, who drives Kaun into the corner. Kaun chops Lashley. Lashley drops Kaun onto his back with a suplex. Lashley sends Kaun over the top rope, then into the barricade.

Back from break, Liona delivers a Samoan Drop to Benjamin, then follows up with a senton. Liona rocks Lashley with forearm strikes in the corner. Lashley applies the Hurt Lock on Liona, but Kaun breaks it up with a high boot. Lashley is then sent to the outside. Liona rams Lashley into the barricade. Back in the ring, Benjamin connects with a thrust kick to Kaun, He follows up with a pair of German suplexes. Lashley levels Liona on the outside. Benjamin nails Kaun with a knee strike. Lashley finishes him off with a spear.

Winner: Hurt Syndicate

After the match, MJF walks down to the ring and says to give it up for the Hurt Syndicate. MJF says some people are slow learners, which doesn’t amuse Lashley. MJF says he has talent in the back. MVP tells him to lay down his cards. MJF introduces a line of women, telling the Hurt Syndicate they can have a night with the ladies as long as they give him three thumbs up. Benjamin says this is nice, but he needs a little more time. Benjamin specifically says he wants the watch off his wrist. Benjamin still gives MJF a thumbs down. MJF says he thinks he’s growing on Benjamin and gives Benjamin the watch and the ladies anyways. MJF says when he joins the group, there will be more watches and women for them. MJF says he respects Lashley, but he is intent on getting what he wants.

Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tourney: Konosuke Takeshita (w/ Don Callis) vs. Will Ospreay

Takeshita and Ospreay trade submission holds. Ospreay chops him against the ropes. Takeshita applies a head lock, then drops Ospreay with a shoulder tackle. Ospreay takes him down with an arm drag. Ospreay follows up with a senton. Takeshita wipes out Ospreay with a dive to the outside.

Back from break, Ospreay rocks Takeshita with a spinning kick. Ospreay follows up with an elbow for a near fall. He chops Takeshita, who responds with a lariat. Takeshita drops him with a brainbuster. Takeshita sits atop the turnbuckle. Ospreay meets him there and delivers a Stundog Millionaire. Ospreay follows up with an Os-cutter on the outside. Ospreay lands a missile dropkick and a skytwister press for a near fall. Ospreay hits another Os-cutter. Takeshita and Ospreay trade falls. Takeshita drops Ospreay with a suplex, then bridges into another pinfall. Ospreay kicks out.

Ospreay and Takeshita trade strikes. Ospreay lands two big boots. Takeshita clocks him with an elbow in return. Ospreay knocks Takeshita to his knees with another kick. He calls for a Hidden Blade, but Takeshita collapses to the mat before he can hit it. As Ospreay talks to the referee, Takeshita rocks Ospreay with another elbow and a Blue Thunder Bomb. Ospreay lands a Hidden Blade. Ospreay spikes Takeshita on the mat. Takeshita clocks Ospreay from behind. Ospreay rolls away before he can make the cover. Both men are down in the center of the ring. The referee begins his count. They reach their feet at the count of nine.

Takeshita and Ospreay meet atop the turnbuckle. Takeshita lands a lariat off the top. Ospreay responds with a Hidden Blade and a Styles Clash. Ospreay then covers him, but Takeshita kicks out. Ospreay finally finishes off Takeshita with a Storm Breaker.

Winner: Will Ospreay

AEW World Trios Titles: Death Riders (Jon Moxley Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta) (c) vs. The Opps (Katsuyori Shibata & Samoa Joe) & Powerhouse Hobbs

All six brawl out of the gate. In the ring, Hobbs crushes Yuta in the corner with forearm strikes. Moxley distracts Hobbs. Hobbs slams Yuta to the mat, then tags in Joe. Joe fires off right hands, then rocks Yuta with an enziguri. Joe chops Yuta, then tags in Shibata, who does the same. Shibata knocks Moxley off the apron. Yuta sends Shibata to the outside, where Claudio launches him into the barricade. Yuta tags in Moxley, who taunts his opponents. Moxley makes a quick tag to Claudio. Claudio knocks Shibata to the mat.

Back from break, Shibata rocks Claudio with an uppercut. Joe and Yuta tag back in. Joe delivers a powerslam and goes for the cover, but Moxley breaks it up. Moxley grabs a chair from under the ring. Willow Nightingale rushes down and takes the chair from his hands. Yuta dropkicks Joe. Shibata takes down Yuta. Claudio rocks Shibata with an uppercut. Hobbs slams Claudio to the mat with a spinebuster. Moxley and Joe wipes out each other. The Young Bucks circle the ring. Matt Jackson grabs another chair. Swerve Strickland clocks Matt before he can use it. He sends both Matt and Nick over the barricade.

Back in the ring, Claudio uppercuts Joe. Shibata applies a sleeper hold on Claudio on the ramp, then runs him over with a knee. Yuta strikes Joe from behind, then leaps to the outside. However, he’s caught by Hobbs and dumped onto the announce table. Marina Shafir strikes Hobbs with a chair. Nightingale levels her in return. Back in the ring, Joe locks in a choke hold on Moxley, who fades.

Winners (And New): Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata, and Powerhouse Hobbs

After the match, the AEW locker room celebrates with the new AEW Trios Champions.
