AEW Dynamite August 14, 2024: Mercedes Mone & The Young Bucks Defend Their Gold, Strickland vs. Yuta

This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite emanates from the Chartway Arena in Northfolk, Virginia. Mercedes Mone defends the TBS Championship against Hikaru Shida. Jack Perry beats down Darby Allin. Chris Jericho is now set to defend his FTW Championship at AEW All In. The Young Bucks put the AEW World Tag Team Championships on the line. Swerve Strickland takes on Wheeler Yuta, and more!

We break it all down in this week’s AEW Dynamite results!

TBS Championship: Mercedes Mone (c) (w/ Kamille) vs. Hikaru Shida

Mone and Shida battle back and forth for the majority of the match. In the closing moments, Shida delivers a Falcon Arrow, to which Mone kicks out. Kamille then pulls Mone out of the ring, prompting Shida to hit her with a dropkick. Shida then whacks Kamille with her kendo stick. Mone grabs the kendo stick from Shida’s hand. With the referee distracted, Kamille nails Shida with a big boot to the face. In the ring, Mone then hits Shida with a Mone Maker for the win.

Winner (And Still): Mercedes Mone

After the match, Britt Baker emerges through the crowd with a glove in hand, while Kamille is distracted by a decoy hooded figure. Baker takes down Mone and looks to put her in the Lockjaw, but Kamille intervenes and pulls Mercedes to safety. Baker poses with the TBS Championship.

Backstage, Jay Lethal speaks with Renee Paquette ahead of his match against “Hangman” Adam Page. Page appears out of nowhere and brawls with Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal. Page leads Lethal out to the ring and the bell rings to signal the start of their match.

Jay Lethal vs. “Hangman” Adam Page

Lethal lands five suicide dives on Page to start the match, to which Page responds with a Deadeye on the apron. Later, Page looked to land another Deadeye, but Lethal counters it into pinfall. Page kicks out and wipes out Lethal with a Buckshot Lariat for the win.

Winner: Adam Page

AEW plays a video package highlighting MFJ’s recent American Championship defense against Michael Oku at RevPro, as well as MJF’s upcoming title defense against Will Ospreay at AEW All In.

Backstage, PAC reminds everyone that he is the number one contender to the AEW American Championship. With Will Ospreay already slated to challenge MJF at AEW All In, PAC asserts that he is cashing in his title shot at AEW All Out in Chicago.

Jack Perry Attacks Darby Allin

In a vignette, Darby Allin acknowledges that Jack Perry signed to AEW before him, but says he didn’t have to sacrifice much before coming aboard. Allin says Perry is now in his most authentic form – a child that takes everything for granted. Allin says Perry takes AEW for granted, and wishes he got fired for all the BS he pulled last year. Allin vows to put their feud to an end at AEW All In.

Darby Allin prepares to walk down the entrance ramp, but is ambushed by Jack Perry. Perry drags Allin backstage, where they continue to brawl. Perry sends Allin crashing into a garage door then traps him underneath it. Perry then looks to ram a production chest into Allin, but AEW officials stop him and pull him away. Perry challenges Allin to elevate their TNT Championship match with an added Coffin match stipulation.

A short film by Mariah May premieres, hyping up her AEW Women’s World Championship match against Toni Storm at All In. 

Backstage, Mina Shirakawa says she has not spoken to Mariah May or Toni Storm since AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door and is heartbroken by their falling out. Mina says she’s never seen May to be so vicious, and Storm so obsessed with revenge. Nevertheless, Mina hopes neither woman gets hurt at AEW All In.

Winner Receives Number One Spot In AEW All In Casino Gauntlet Match: Roderick Strong vs. Orange Cassidy vs. Kyle O’Reilly

Matt Taven and Mike Bennett attempt to distract the referee, but Mark Briscoe and Tomohiro Ishii rush down to even the odds. Briscoe then wipes out both Taven and Bennett with a suicide dive, prompting all four men to brawl to the backstage area.

In the match’s closing moments, O’Reilly and Strong trade a series of forearm strikes, when O’Reilly inadvertently hits Cassidy. O’Reilly then looks to put Strong in a cross armbreaker, but Cassidy rolls him up for a pinfall.

Winner: Orange Cassidy

Renee Paquette interviews AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada and Claudio Castagnoli ahead of their title match on Dynamite next week. Okada says Castagnoli will respect him when he defeats him next week in Cardiff. Okada says “Good luck, b****,” and walks away. Castagnoli says he wants the true “Rainmaker” next week on Dynamite and vows to bring his best. Castagnoli says Okada will have 99 problems, and “this b****” will be number one.

Backstage, Christian Cage proclaims that he called last week’s AEW Collision trios match right down the middle and neither team could beat his count of ten. Cage says the AEW Trios Championships are just a vehicle for him to get back to the AEW World Championship. Cage vows to hold every single title in AEW at the same time.

Hook vs. Chris Jericho Confirmed For AEW All In

Hook says he still can’t see out of his one eye, but can still see out of the other one. Hook wants a rematch for the FTW Championship against Chris Jericho.

Jericho then appears alongside Big Bill and Bryan Keith. Jericho calls Hook a stupid son of a b**** and says tonight is not worth his time to defend the FTW Championship; Wembley Stadium, however, is. Jericho offers Hook an FTW Championship at All In, but asserts that this will be his last shot at the title, and if he loses, Hook must walk out of the Jericho vortex forever. Jericho also says Hook must face and beat Big Bill next week. Hook agrees and promises Jericho that he will never be the same again.

AEW World Tag Team Championships: The Young Bucks (c) vs. The Acclaimed

Anthony Bowens and Max Caster blindside Nick and Matt Jackson on the entrance ramp. Later, Billy Gunn gets ejected after threatening to hit Nick Jackson with a steel chair.

In the final moments, the referee gets knocked out, prompting Matt to low blow Caster. Matt then grabs a hold of a tag team title belt, but FTR’s Dax Harwood takes it away from him. Harwood attacks the Matt Jackson, causing the referee to call for the bell.

Winners (And Still): The Young Bucks (via disqualification)

Backstage, Christopher Daniels confirms that FTR and The Acclaimed will face off in a number one contender match on AEW Collision, with the winners receiving a shot at the AEW World Tag Team Championships at All In.

Swerve Strickland vs. Wheeler Yuta

Bryan Danielson sits front row to watch his Blackpool Combat Club comrade take on Strickland. Despite a valiant effort, Yuta loses after taking three House Calls and flurry of strikes from Strickland, causing the referee to stop the match, and award the victory to Strickland.

Winner: Swerve Strickland

Post-match, Danielson hops the barricade, prompting Strickland to retreat. Strickland grabs a microphone and vows to cripple and retire Danielson in front of his daughter at AEW All In. As Strickland leaves through the tunnel, Danielson checks on Yuta in the ring. Strickland then rushes back out and hits Danielson with a House Call. Strickland mocks Danielson with the “yes” chant as Dynamite goes off the air.
