Maria Kanellis provided a health update recently and also mentioned that her AEW contract expires at the end of the month.
Kanellis will undergo surgery on October 24 due to a mass found on her adrenal gland. It’s not yet known if the mass is cancerous or genetic. This week, she has an ultrasound and genetic testing planned, along with a meeting with her surgeon.
In an update posted to Instagram, Kanellis says her AEW contract status is “weighing on” her as she grows closer to the surgery date.
“We’re getting close to my surgery, and we’re within 20 days of it at this point. This week I have an ultrasound, I have genetic testing, and I also am meeting with my surgeon.”
“Also, my contract with AEW is coming up on October 31. I’ve reached out to them to find out whether or not they are going to be signing me, but I haven’t really heard anything yet, so of course that is weighing on me as well.”
“But because it’s that time of year where it’s spooky season, I’m trying to focus on that. So, I have this stick here and today I’m going to work on some outdoor Halloween decorations because the rest of it I can’t control right now. I can’t control AEW, I can’t control this surgery, but what I can do is make some wonderful memories for my kids, so today that is going to be my focus.”
She captioned the post with, “Don’t know if it’s cancer. Don’t know if it’s genetic. Don’t know if I will be working for AEW. I have zero answers but I have this stick, and it will make my kids happy.”
Kanellis posted the following to X on Tuesday:
“For those asking I will be accepting interviews about my time and treatment in @aew after October 31st. I will be able to start taking bookings 6 weeks after my surgery so starting the second week in December.”
She would later add on Instagram: “I tried getting an answer for almost 2 months from AEW. So, now I’m trying to get everything settled for after my surgery.”
Kanellis has been with AEW since October 2022. Upon her debut, she was positioned alongside Matt Taven and her husband Mike Bennett in The Kingdom. She has also managed Griff Garrison, Cole Karter and others in Ring of Honor.
In August, Kanellis revealed she is pursuing a Masters in Business Administration at the University of Illinois with funding assistance through AEW’s tuition reimbursement program.
