Mercedes Moné says she signed with All Elite Wrestling because she wants more for women’s wrestling.
During a recent intervew with Uproxx Sports, the TBS Champion spoke about the legacy she wants to leave wrestling and how taking AEW’s women’s division to new heights is part of her story.
Moné said:
“(I knew) where I wanted to be and what I want to leave in professional wrestling, to take this women’s division to whole new heights all over the world. I wanted to have more for women’s wrestling, so I knew going to AEW was the place to be to make that happen. I feel like the women’s division has really changed the game. The women’s division has been the best it’s ever been. The women’s storylines are headlining AEW pay-per-views. So it’s just been amazing to come this far and I’m really excited for more.”
She continued:
“I was born to be the best. I was born to have this purpose of leading a charge of making sure that women’s wrestling is known and respected and it deserves the respect that it’s given. So, just leaning on the standard that I put for myself, I’m here to be the best, to show the world that I’m the best, and I’m here to bring the women along with me. So that’s the goal.”
Moné is gearing up to defend her title against Kris Statlander coming up later this month at AEW Full Gear, but there is someone else she’s keeping her eye on as well. AEW Women’s World Champion Mariah May has caught Mone’s attention. She called her storyline with Toni Storm one of the best in the history of women’s wrestling.
Moné said of May:
“She came in as a super fan, just loving wrestling, loved it so much that she moved from England to Japan, trained out in Stardom just to hone her craft, and now she’s here.”
“She is our women’s world champion, beating Toni Storm in one of the best storylines in women’s history. So to see her rise this fast and to see how good she is in the ring, it’s so incredible. Like I said, we have the best women’s division in the game right now. And I’m definitely looking at the title that she has around her waist.”
May doesn’t currently have an opponent scheduled for Full Gear. However, her longtime friend and former Club Venus stablemate, Mina Shirakawa, is scheduled to return to AEW on tonight’s episode of Dynamite. Meanwhile, former AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm hasn’t been seen in the company since dancing out of Wembley Stadium after losing her title to May at All In.
