New Japan Pro Wrestling: Fighting Spirit Unleashed Preview

New Japan Pro Wrestling will be hosting their third show in the United States this year. as part of their global expansion. Fighting Spirit Unleashed will take place at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, the same place they did housed their last Long Beach show.

From top to bottom this might be the most complete show that they’ve had presented here in the U.S.

Aside from not having a marquee IWGP Title match this card features singles and tag-team matches that will have a long-term impact going forward in 2018 and leading into 2019.

Take a look at the card for Fighting Spirit Unleashed.

1. ACH, Ryusuke Taguchi and Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Roppongi 3K

Every person in this match is a solid in-ring worker, therefore you can expect this match to be a fun and exciting start to the show. With legend, Jushin Thunder Liger, his presence alone will get the crowd into it, and if Ryusuke Taguchi has his working shoes on then it is surely to deliever.

2. Frankie Kazarian and Christopher Daniels vs. Chase Owens and Hangman Page

The Addiction are a great team and Hangman Page is close to being a huge star. Hopefully they let Chase Owens shine during this match because he extremely underrated in the ring. This match at worse will be solid but has a chance to be very good.

3. Flip Gordon, Chris Sabin and Jeff Cobb vs. Best Friends and Hirooki Goto

Expect flips, comedy, and hard-hitting action in this match.

4. Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, and SANADA vs. Zack Sabre Jr. and Killer Elite Squad

I’m not really sure what to expect from this other than it will probably be kept short and EVIL will pick up the win to set up a match with Chris Jericho.

5. Hiroshi Tanahashi and KUSHIDA vs. Jay White and Gedo

This match is really low on the card considering who’s in it and the angle that New Japan just ran with Jay White. The focus will be Jay White since New Japan is putting all their eggs in his basket. This match will also set up the future Jay White vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi match for Tanahashi’s Wrestle Kingdom IWGP Title shot.

6. Will Ospreay vs. Marty Scurll in a IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title tournament semi-final

These two can’t have a bad match with each other. Their last encounter resulted in a 5 star match and Will Ospreay nearly decapitating himself. Let’s hope we don’t get that from Ospreay this time around because this match has a chance to be special.

7. The Young Bucks(c) vs. Guerillas of Destiny for the IWGP Tag Team Titles

This is the first real big encounter for G.O.D since the split from the Elite. Expect this match to be really good because I sense that G.O.D have something to prove and will try and prove it possibly in this match. It might not be a popular opinion but I expect a title change here.

8. Juice Robinson(c) vs. Cody for the IWGP United States Title

Politically this match is very interesting now that Cody is the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion. Both of these guys are going to be very popular with this crowd which will add to the match. Their Wrestle Kingdom match from last year was nothing special but both have grown so much in the last 21 months so it should be a lot better. Will Cody walk out as double champion?

9. Tomohiro Ishii and Kazuchika Okada vs. Kota Ibushi and Kenny Omega

If you thought the main event at the last Long Beach show was special this might top it. These four guys have delivered some of the most classic matches in the last few years against one another. Expect magic with this match. This is the first time that the American fans will get to see Omega vs Okada go at it live. I do expect a Jay White run in but not before we are given a classic.

Fighting Spirit Unleashed will air live on NJPWWorld.com starting at 8 pm EST/5 pm PST with Kevin Kelly and Jim Ross calling the action. The show will also air on 10/5 on AXS TV the regular home for  the English language New Japan broadcast.
