It is hard to believe that we are already in the final week of September! The pro wrestling world ended this month with a bang, including a major title change and a legendary feud reigniting for possibly the last time. As we head towards Bad Blood and WrestleDream, let’s look at the biggest moment from AEW and WWE this week!
5. First-ever two-night SummerSlam announced
On the heels of WrestleMania going to two nights in 2020, it was announced by the WWE on September 26th that the first-ever two-night SummerSlam event will take place at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey on August 2nd and 3rd in 2025. Met Life Stadium was also the host of WrestleMania 35 with the first-ever women’s Mania main event between Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Ronda Rousey.
4. Darby Allin loses his AEW World Championship chance
When you look at home-built talent within AEW, Darby Allin tops that list. He had a chance to finally capture his first world championship with the company when he won the Royal Rampage match following Blood & Guts.
Enter a returning Jon Moxley with a new demeanor and a new faction, and he talked Allin into wrestling him for the #1 contender’s spot at WrestleDream. After a brutal match, Moxley came out on top with an Avalanche Death Rider. Moxley will now take on his former Blackpool Combat Club stablemate Bryan Danielson at WrestleDream on October 12th.
3. MVP makes his AEW television debut
At AEW Grand Slam this past Wednesday, Prince Nana returned home to New York to provide an update on Swerve Strickland after a brutal Lights Out Steel Cage Match with Hangman Adam Page. To everyone’s surprise, he was interrupted by a debuting MVP who wants to do “business” with Swerve as Nana isn’t getting the job done.
It’ll be interesting to see where things go from here, and if past “business” partners join MVP in AEW such as Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin.
2. Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness lock up for possibly the final time
After months and months of Nigel McGuinness talking down to Bryan Danielson on commentary, one of the greatest feuds in Ring Of Honor history reignited inside an AEW ring on Dynamite when the two wrestled for the first time in 15 years. These two went nearly 20 minutes in a tremendous match that saw McGuinness say “thank you” to Danielson as he tapped out Nigel with the LeBell Lock.
1. Jey Uso wins his first singles championship in WWE
Jey Uso began his WWE career with his brother Jimmy in 2010 with Florida Championship Wrestling. From The Usos to the Bloodline, Jey has made history, but on Monday night, he captured a singles title for the first time in his career after a hard-fought match with Bron Breakker. Jey was understandably emotional in an interview with Jackie Redmond in the crowd afterward.
