Miguel Ángel López Díaz, known to wrestling fans as Rey Misterio Sr. and the uncle of Rey Mysterio Jr., passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 66.
His death was revealed today via his son’s Facebook page.
“Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my Father, Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, King Misterio Sr. Passed away this morning.. . will keep you informed. Thank you,” wrote Hijo De Rey Misterio Lopez.

Born on January 8, 1955, in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, Misterio Sr. debuted on January 6, 1976. Throughout his career, he achieved significant success, including winning the WWA Tag Team Championship alongside his nephew, Mysterio Jr., in 1995.
Beyond his in-ring accomplishments, Misterio Sr. was a respected trainer and opened his own school in 1987. He mentored future stars such as Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, Damian 666, and his nephew.
Misterio Sr’s son, Miguel Aarón López Hernández, is also a wrestler. He performs under the name El Hijo de Rey Misterio or Rey Misterio Heredero. He hasn’t wrestled since working a few shows for AAA in October.
