AEW Dynamite December 18, 2024: TBS Title Defense, Death Riders In Action, C2 Continues

This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite emanates from the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, DC! Mercedes Mone defends the TBS Championship against Anna Jay. The Death Riders take on Orange Cassidy, Jay White, and Adam Page. The Continental Classic continues with two matches, and more!

We break it all down in this week’s AEW Dynamite recap!

Backstage, Orange Cassidy, Jay White, and Adam Page look ahead to their tag title match tonight, but later find the latter two arguing.

TBS Championship: Mercedes Mone (c) vs Anna Jay

Mone slaps Jay and goes for a pin, but Jay kicks out. Mone takes her down with a shoulder tackle. Jay rains down with right hands in the corner. Mone lands a Three Amigos. She then goes up top looking for a splash, but Jay rolls out of the way and hits a flipping neckbreaker. Mone chokes Jay with her own arms and follows up with a backstabber. Mone delivers a meteora and covers Jay, but she kicks out. Mone locks in a straight jacket submission. Jay escapes, but Mone pulls her to the mat by her hair. She lands another meteora.

Back from break, Jay nails Mone with a neckbreaker, then lands a trio of kicks in the corner. Jay whips Mone off the top and to the mat. Jay follows up with a Gory Bomb. Jay hits a neckbreaker on the ropes and locks in a Queenslayer. Mone breaks free by biting Jay’s arm. Jaye counters the Statement Maker, with a roll-up, but Mone rolls right back into it. Jay breaks free and rams Mone into the corner. She rolls her up, but Mone kicks out. Mone rocks Jay with a sunset bomb and double knees in the corner. She finishes her off with a Money Maker for the win.

Winner(And Still): Mercedes Mone

FTR appear in a pre-taped segment. They address their recent beating at the hands of the Death Riders. Harwood said it got them thinking about their lives after wrestling as the doctors wouldn’t clear them yet. FTR, however, plan to be ready by January 1 in Asheville, and ready for retribution.

We Hear From MJF

MJF says he doesn’t care about the crowd’s opinions, then takes a shot at the Washington Wizards. MJF says Santa isn’t real, then points out that Hannukah is coming up. In the spirt of Hannukah, MJF says he’s feeling philanthropic. MJF cues sad music, telling a story about a small child who needs nourishment. He points to the Titantron, which shows an image of Adam Cole. MJF says people can help that small “baybay” by buying the Worlds End pay-per-view. MJF says money from the PPV buy will go toward his foundation to help Cole.

Adam Cole appears on the Titantron again. Cole informs MJF that Matt Taven and Mike Bennett will be in his corner at AEW Worlds End. Cole THEN appears behind MJF and beats him, laying him out with a superkick. He then looks for a Panama Sunrise, but MJF flees before he can hit it.

Backstage, Jamie Hayter calls Julia Hart a coward for attacking her from behind last weekend. Hayter then challenges Hart to a match at AEW Fight for the Fallen.

Christian Cage & Nick Wayne vs. Hook & Katsuyori Shibata

Wayne and Hook lock up and battle to a standstill. Cage and Shibata tag in and lock up. Cage looks for a Killswitch, but Shibata pushes him off. Cage fires off a slap. Shibata responds with an elbow strike and series of slaps. Wayne and Hook tag back in, with the latter sending the former over the top rope. Hook then launches Cage to the outside as well.

Shibata tags in and waits for his opponents to return to the ring. Hook tags back in. Wayne looks for a boot, but Hook counters with a Redrum. Wayne escapes, paving the way for Cage bounce Hook’s head against the ropes.

Back from break, Hook levels Wayne with a suplex. Shibata charges in with a big elbow strike to Cage and a big boot to Wayne in the corner. Shibata tees off with chops. He follows up with a dropkick. Shibata locks Wayne in an arm submission. Wayne escapes, but is then met with a stomp to the back from Shibata. Shibata trips Wayne. Meanwhile, Hook suplexes Cage on the outside floor.

Kip Sabian tries to distract Hook, but is instead clocked in the face. Hook levels Cage on the outside. Back in the ring, Shibata locks in a sleeper hold on Wayne. Sabian distracts Shibata, prompting Hook to lock in Redrum on him. While Mama Wayne distracts the referee, Cage gouges the eyes of Shibata and places Wayne in the cover. The referee turns around to count it.

Winners: Christian Cage and Nick Wayne

Chris Jericho takes the streets of New York City in a video montage hyping his upcoming ROH World Championship title defense against Matt Cardona.

Another video package plays hyping the imminent return of Bandido.

Mariah May cuts a promo enticing Thunder Rosa to bring her father to their upcoming title match. May asks if being a failure runs in the family. She says she won’t be bringing her own father, as she doesn’t want him to see what she’s going to do to Rosa.

We Hear From Ricochet

Tony Schiavone introduces Ricochet. Schiavone says we’ve seen a different Ricochet lately. The Hurt Syndicate’s music hits. Ricochet asks MVP if he saw his recent Continental Classic performances. Ricochet then says if Shelton Benjamin can catch up in his league, they might face off in the future. Ricochet vows to show Will Ospreay a different side of him this weekend. MVP asks Ricochet to hand him his business card. Bobby Lashley grabs Ricochet’s throat, while MVP rips up the card. MVP says nobody likes a kiss-ass.

The Hurt Syndicate allow Ricochet to leave the ring. MVP tells Benjamin to hurt someone, as he prepares to face The Beast Mortos.

Continental Classic Blue League Match: Shelton Benjamin vs. The Beast Mortos

Benjamin and Mortos lock up. Benjamin drops Mortos on his back, then whips him into the corner. Mortos jumps over the rope and takes down Benjamin. Benjamin fires back with an elbow strike. Mortos catches the leg of Benjamin and wrenches at his ankle. Mortos gets caught up on the top rope, paving the way for Benjamin to launch him to the outside.

Back from break, MVP on commentary notes that they’re keeping an eye on Benjamin’s knee, as he recently had surgery on it. Benjamin connects with an enziguri in the ring. Mortos rocks him with a headbutt, then hits a spinning splash off the top. Benjamin responds with a running powerslam. Mortos lands another headbutt and a rolling elbow strike. Benjamin charges in with a thrust kick and a trio of German suplexes. Benjamin follows up with a pair of knees. Benjamin plants Mortos to the mat for the win.

Winner: Shelton Benjamin

After the match, Lashley and MVP join Benjamin in the ring. Lashley begins teeing off on Mortos. Benjamin pulls him to his feet and hits another German Suplex. MVP tells Daniel Garcia this is what he can look forward to from Benjamin on Saturday. Garcia appears on the stage. Mark Briscoe joins Garcia in fighting Lashley and Benjamin. Lashley and Benjamin, however, gain the upper hand, leaving Garcia and Briscoe lying on the mat. Benjamin takes the TNT Championship and poses with it.

Backstage, Ricochet says he’s not worrying about The Hurt Syndicate right now. Instead, he’s looking ahead to the C2, including his upcoming match against Will Ospreay. Swerve Strickland and Prince Nana appear. Strickland says it was only a matter of time before Ricochet showed his real self, a follower. Strickland says that doesn’t work in AEW, though, as it’s Swerve’s House. Ricochet says the real Strickland didn’t win the C2 last year, so it’ll eat him up when Ricochet wins it this year.

Toni Storm speaks with RJ City for an interview. City asks Storm where she’s been. Storm says she grew up in Australia and eventually made it to AEW. City continues to ask Storm about her accomplishments in AEW, which Storm seems to have no recollection of. City asks Storm about “Timeless” Toni Storm, to which Storm says it’s Toni Time.

Continental Classic Gold League Match: Will Ospreay vs. Darby Allin

Ospreay and Allin lock up. Ospreay looks to chop Allin, but he ducks and transitions into a headlock. Ospreay escapes. Allin looks for an arm drag, but Ospreay leaps out of it. Allin hits a springboard crossbody. Allin follows up with a dropkick. Ospreay aims for a slingshot dive, but misses. Allin goes for Coffin Drop, but Ospreay moves out of the way, causing Allin to land spine-first on the mat.

Back from break, Allin rocks Ospreay with a stunner. Ospreay kicks Allin in the corner, then descends with a spinning splash. Allin dodges it. Ospreay nails Allin with a Hidden Blade, but Allin bounces back with a Code Red. Ospreay and Allin trade strikes. Ospreay knocks Allin down with a big chop. Allin rolls up Ospreay for a near fall. Ospreay looks for Os-cutter, but Allin evades it and hits a Coffin Drop. Allin goes up top looking for a superplex. Ospreay sweeps him off his feet and executes a Styles Clash off the apron.

The referee begins the count. Allin reenters the ring at the count of nine, only to meet an Os-cutter. Ospreay looks for Storm Breaker, but Allin reverses into a Scorpion Death Drop. He follows up with a pair of Coffin Drops for the win.

Winner: Darby Allin

Post-match, The Death Riders’ music hits. Claudio Castagnoli appears and stares down Allin.

Six Man Tag: Adam Page, Jay White & Orange Cassidy vs. Death Riders (Jon Moxley, PAC & Wheeler Yuta)

Cassidy dropkicks Yuta. Pac grabs Cassidy’s hair. Cassidy escapes and wipes out Yuta and Pac on the outside. Moxley strikes Cassidy in the throat before rolling him back into the ring. Cassidy delivers a back body drop to Moxley. Page tags in and takes down Pac with a lariat, then a fallaway slam on Yuta. Page stares down Marina Shafir on the outside. Yuta drags him back into the ring, only to meet a lariat.

Page demands Moxley to tag in. White tags himself in, prompting an argument with Page. Page retreats to the back. White looks for a Bladrunner on Moxley, but Moxley escape it. Moxley and his partners begin beating down White. Claudio strikes Cassidy with an uppercut on the outside.

Back from break, White chops Yuta and throws him to the outside. White goes to his corner for a tag, but no one is there. White chops Pac, then drops him on his back. Pac rocks White with a series of kicks. White responds with a lariat and a suplex. Pac hits a suplex of his own. White DDTs Moxley and finally catches a tag from Cassidy. Cassidy fires off kicks on Moxley, then spikes him with a DDT. Yuta delivers a German suplex to Cassidy. White hits Yuta with a suplex of his own. Pac levels White and ascends the top rope. Cassidy meets him there and brings him down with a superplex. Moxley boots Cassidy from behind and executes a cutter.

Page returns to the ring and looks for a Buckshot Lariat. Before he can hit it, however, Cassidy strikes Moxley with an Orange Punch. Page charges in with a Buckshot Lariat on Yuta. White hits a Bladerunner on Pac. White and Page argue, while Moxley surprises Cassidy with a roll-up for the win.

Winners:

Post-match, Death Riders surround the ring. White, Page, and Cassidy fend them off, while Moxley and Shafir retreat through the crowd.
